FPB urges next government to review workplace law

Mike Symes - Friday 16.04.10, 08:16am

Workplace law must be rebalanced in favour of employers, rather than individuals, it has been claimed.

According to the Forum of Private Business (FPB), increasingly-onerous employment legislation has put many smaller firms off hiring, or even advertising new roles. The organisation believes redressing the balance between employers’ and employees’ rights should be one of the key priorities for the next government.

FPB policy representative Matthew Goodman said that with growing unemployment and an every-changing landscape of employment law, any new government should dedicate itself to rebalancing the cost and risk of employing staff.

He commented: “Many of our members feel that the current burden of employment law weighs disproportionately on their business, creating unreasonable compliance burdens on most small businesses and ruining relationships between employers and employees.

Mr Goodman said the UK economy will suffer during the recovery because of this imbalance as small firms are reluctant to hire. “Some are even afraid to advertise for staff after hearing of serial litigators who scrutinise the wording of job adverts for opportunities to sue employers,” he added. According to the Federation of Small Businesses, growing firms should seek advice when implementing employment laws.
