Johnson Offers Cash For Loos In London

John Williams - Friday 15.08.08, 20:25pm

Small Businesses in London are being urged to open their private loos to the public. New mayor Boris Johnson has introduced a cash initiative to business owners in the capital worth between £600 and £1000 per year.

There has been a sharp decline in the number of public lavatories across the UK, but since 1999 the city has witnessed the highest loss in the country.

Boris Johnson sees the cash incentive as a way to encourage business owners to join in the project and a whole lot cheaper than the council owning and maintaining  public conveniences.

“The Community Toilet Scheme is a common sense and cost effective solution to the lack of public toilets in London,” Johnson said. “It is also an ingenious way around the high costs normally associated with running them.

Other London Boroughs have similar schemes in place, Richmond in south London was the first to introduce it in 2005. Since it’s launch 75 pubs, cafes and shops have participated in the project.
