A survey carried out on behalf of BT and Enterprise Nation reports that the number of small businesses being started from home have soared in the last twelve months, with start ups in the period up by 16%.
Home businesses in the UK are said to now number 2.5million, with many owners seeing no alternative than to work for themselves in the current economic climate.
London leads the way for new start ups followed by Leicester, Nottingham, Bristol and Coventry, with the greatest concentration of home businesses in London, the East and South East of England.
There is also plenty of confidence being shown by the new entrepreneurs, with a high percentage expecting to increase business and win new customers over the next six months and over half looking to develop new products or services.
Emma Jones, founder of Enterprise Nation, itself a home-based business, said: “More home business means more dynamism in the economy, less traffic on the roads and tighter social cohesion as parents stay home to run a business and the household.”
